Sitework
Throughout our decades of experience, we’ve built a reputation for completing projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standard of excellence. We’ve also become experts at diagnosing obstacles that hinder our ability to achieve these standards and finding ways to innovate around them.
Sitework is one of the most involved — and most pivotal — parts of the entire construction process. Sitework professionals are often the first on site, and the last off. In other words, efficient and experienced sitework professionals can often make or break the job—scheduling conflicts can set back timelines, misconstrued plans can be costly in terms of budget and resources, and levels of understanding can differ across the various parties involved. Because sitework is such an important, yet sometimes variable factor in the success of a project, we decided in the summer of 2021 to mitigate some of the variability and develop our very own, specialized in-house sitework team.
Since then, we’ve grown our internal team to more than a dozen experienced professionals led by DJ Sadowski, MHCM’s director of sitework and a 30-year industry veteran. The sitework leadership team is comprised of DJ and Project Superintendents Craig McKenna and Herb Lasher, who together have 80+ years of combined field experience. The trio has worked together for the past 15 years and have been instrumental in building a cohesive, collaborative team of professionals over the past year-and-a-half.
Our team works “from the ground down,” with experience and capabilities that cover a wide range of client needs, including but not limited to:
- Structural Excavation & Backfill
- Mass Excavation & Backfill
- Site Demolition
- Site Preparation
- Foundation & Concrete
- Utilities
- Fine Grading
- Site Finishing
Additionally, our in-house team has amassed an impressive roster of vetted community connections for specialty jobs, such as paving and landscaping.
Our fleet of excavation equipment and trucks are of the highest quality and perform with the utmost efficiency. This allows our team of experts to be well-equipped and ready to take on a variety of projects quickly.
By developing our sitework team in-house, we’re ensuring that our projects maintain continuity of service and quality. By eliminating the need for a third party sitework team, we’re able to maintain control of our projects and therefore stay within the budgets and timelines that we set at the project’s start.
Experts in Pre-Planning and Site Evaluation
As the first ones on the job, sitework professionals are tasked with evaluating the project site and mapping out the necessary steps required to ensure the site is in appropriate condition for construction. We were brought on by Hudson Valley Hospice, a not-for-profit healthcare agency dedicated to helping individuals who are near the end of life, to spearhead the complete site development of a brand-new Hospice House based in Hyde Park, the first care facility of its kind in Dutchess County, NY.
Our team started with a raw site and was tasked with the complete excavation of the property, installation of utilities, and foundation pouring for the $10 million Hospice House. Upon analyzing the site early in the process, our experts found that the property contained unsuitable soils and large quantities of rock, both unusual challenges in the scope of sitework. However, the Mid Hudson Construction Management team was able to overcome these obstacles due to the extensive measures taken during the pre-planning phase, when the site was evaluated for potential issues such as these. Utilizing past experience as a guide, the team took the initiative to work directly with design professionals to mitigate the soil unsuitability issue, turning what could have been a multi-month setback into a smaller scale timeline shift of only a couple weeks.
Success in Facing Unexpected Challenges
While raw sites can present their own surprise challenges, working with existing infrastructure brings its own set of unique obstacles to the table. In the fall of 2021, our team was brought on to work on Stissing Townhomes, a multi-family residential project in Pine Plains, NY. The plan featured 48 condo units, but upon taking on the job, only 10 were complete. Our sitework team hit the ground running with an evaluation of the current site and discovered a daunting challenge: the existing utilities and infrastructure were in very poor condition and would need to be replaced before proceeding with the construction of the rest of the condo units.
With our team’s combine decades of experience, we were able to swiftly diagnose the existing issues and build a renovation plan into our overarching plans for the rest of the site. The success of this project is a testament to the importance of on-the-ground experience—because of our team’s depth of expertise, we were able to solve problems as they arose and take setbacks in stride, all while completing construction within the designated timeline.
Home-grown Team with Community Ties
Our sitework team has unmatched expertise—but we also have the unique asset of being intimately familiar with the communities that we are building in. The sitework leadership team is full of Hudson Valley locals—Director of Sitework DJ Sadowski is a Hyde Park resident, while Project Superintendents Craig McKenna and Herb Lasher are long-time residents of Pleasant Valley. What does living in the communities we build in mean to us? It means having an in-depth understanding of community needs, a familiarity with local and regional partners, and a passion for making the Hudson Valley a better place to live, work, and play. Every project we take on is envisioned with economic development, community connection, and localized needs in mind.
What people are saying
To say our customers are loyal is something of an understatement. We are loyal to them and they to us. That’s because time and again we’ve met their goals, their budgets and their timelines and the relationships have been positive and constructive. See what they have to say about MHCM.
